"The Vow" Trailer Analysis

The Vow follows all the cliche conventions of a romantic film, the audience first see's a wedding ceromny going on between the two main charectors (McAdams and Tatum). This suggests themes of romance giving the audience an idea as to the genre making the target audience clear within the first 10 second. It also has themes of comedy as we see the couple and there friends running away from security in a gallery suggesting its a light hearted film. These theme's continue as a 40 second montage of their life together prior the accident. The trailer is in chronological order so the audience continue on with them. Over the top of this montage is Tatum stating the importance of moment in life, he then asks us what if you couldn't remember any of them. This makes us feel sympathy when it hits as we feel like we know them.

The hospital clip focuses from blurred giving the audience the same disorientated feeling as paige continuing to make us feel close to them. In the background we hear a heart mongering machine which we associate with death and trauma, it creates a tense atmosphere which is added onto by the discovery of her brain damage. Its released for valentines day due to its genre and target audience. Dramatic music comes in setting the serious mood of the film at this point when Tatum is discovering his wife doesn't know him anymore. A long angle shot of him in the hospital sitting down on the floor despite there being chairs makes him appear isolated and sad.

It follows the classic cliches of a romantic film where the boy loses the girl and try's to get the girl back as he states " I need to make my wife fall in love with me again". We the couple standing in serrate rooms one on the outside of the door and the other in the bedroom suggesting they are becoming distant and he is unable to help her. The remainder of the trailer follows the pair struggling to get back to where they were prior the accident which will leave the audience questioning whether or not they will be together again.

We see him sleeping on the couch suggesting they are living together but not as a couple post accident. The trailer suggests it doesn't work about between the pair as she say's "I hope one day i can love the way that you love me" but people will have preconceptions of how it will end and assume the ending is him getting the girl back or her getting her memory back. Tatum confirms giving up explain how hard it will be for him to walk away but at the end the audience is given an indicator that there is more to the trailer as Tatum say's "we will always find a way back to each other".

Both stars are commonly associated with the romance genre. McAdam's in the Notebook and about time and Tatum in Dear John and step up. Due to there success's within this genre they already have a fan base primarily young girls who will go and see this film because the pair are in it together.
