"The Hobbit" Empire magazine analysis

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug is an upcoming 2013 fantasy adventure film co-written, produced and directed by Peter Jackson. It is the second of a three-part film interpretation of the novel The Hobbit.

The cover re-introduces Orlando Bloom into the new LOTR franchise 'The Hobbit'. By putting him in the centre and making him larger than the others on the cover it brings more attention to him. This works well as Bloom is the most recognisable actor of the three so readers would take more of an interest in the magazine. His body language suggest like all the previous films it will involve a battle of some sort. On either side of bloom is Lee pace (The Hobbit, An unexpected Journey) and Evangeline Lilly (Hit TV show Lost) also holding weapons enforcing the predicted battle. Both, as well as Bloom play Elves which suggests Elves will be playing a significant part within this film.

The setting of the cover is very dramatic, they're surrounded by ashes and smoke which will remind the audience of fire and danger and also related to the dragon Smaug. Other than the smoke it's mainly a white background which makes the title and character's stand out even more. Red titles is put in making it dramatic and contrasting with the grey and white neutral colours. In huge writing they have 'the Hobbit' written in capital letters which is eye catching. Above that 'on set in middle earth' is written which suggests they will have a lot of behind the scenes look of the film. Due to the big following of the franchise audiences will respond to this and want to buy it to get a first look of the film.
