"Skyfall" Poster Analysis

The image shows James Bond with the back drop of London's parliment and big ben. This tells the audience that the film is set in London which is a reacuring locations within the franchise as it's the location for the MI5 base. This supports James Bond being a british franchise as the poster is filled with british brands for example the Aston Martin, this brand that has been used in 9 previous Bond films so by using it in this poster it's making the film already appear as a classic.

The shot type used is a long shot, allowing the audience to see bonds full body with additional details in the background e.g.parliment, Aston martin. This shot type gives the audience more clues as to the plot of the film, like teaser trailers they tend to relase a numerous amount of posters gradually giving more away about the plot. For example the poster below was released before the one above, so it was part of a gradual build up.

He rests on the car with his hand in his pocket coming across as laid back but formal. As well as this he is holding his gun downwards suggesting without his finger on the trigger. After researching many other bond posters this is the only one I have found when Bond's finger is not on the trigger suggesting the plot of the film as we know in this one he doesn't come out on top. Because of this I feel his body language is supposed to mirror him grieving but his face being very tense and angry represents the part of the film where he seeks revenge on Silva.

From Casino Royal and Quantum of Solace to Skyfall, the posters all share a common design. Each poster has a colour scheme that reflects the mood of the film. The Grey, Black and White colouring of the posters emphasises the age of the franchise and how it's a classic series at it's 50th anniversary which is presented through the gold 007 at the bottom. The moody image also reflects the darker themes of grief and loss into the franchise because of M and Bond's parents.

"Kick-Ass 2" Trailer Analysis

The icon picture for the trailer suggests it will be violet this is then enforced by the 'red band' trailer certificate it has been given. Universal is a huge company, having them behind the movie will make audiences trust that it will be good, the first film was Liongate so it appears as if it's stepping up from the first movie. Despite this is it opened in fifth place, with $13,332,955 when it was expected $15 million or more. Being a sequel audiences can assume it will have the same comedic, teen superhero genre as before. The comedy is shown in the start where Hit Girl (chloe Moretz) beats up Kick Ass (Aaron Johnson) in the first 30 seconds.

An establishing shot of New York at sunset sets where its based up, this location conform to most superhero films such as Spiderman, Avengers and Captain America all of which take part in this city. We see Kick ass walking down the street being high fived by strangers suggests his popularity has stayed in tact or even grown becoming like a real life spiderman. Over the top of this is a new reporter doing a story on the real life superhero's which sets up hit girls scene as she stands in the school gym highlighting the secrecy of it all. They show how their superhero team is growing including stars such as Jim Carey which will work well for there target audience.

Chris D'Amico (christopher Mintz-Plasse) is introduced going over his past with kick ass and what he seeks to do. This gives the audience a clue to the plot of the film for those who are unaware of the first one. It goes onto show violet footage of fight scenes and elaborate explosions all of which are conventions of a action film. Being that the main girl in the two movies is young and not there for the male gaze it's opening up the genre to a new target audience of females too as it gives them someone to identify to who isn't just being saved all the time.

A new villain is also introduced, the police. They want to detain anyone wearing a mask pretending to be a hero. Another similarity to spiderman where the paper is against him and spreads lies to turn the people on him as well. Towards the end we see kick ass being captured without the mask on and hit girl fight without the mask on both suggesting that there identities might get blown in this film giving the audience something to follow up on.

The colouring of the trailer isn't conventional for current superhero movies as they all tend to be going in a dark direct e.g. Batman, Man of steel. This shows a more old fashioned look with bright block colours resembling that in the comic books. This is affective as the colours really stand out and catch your eye especially the yellow and red on the black background.

"The Hobbit" Empire magazine analysis

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug is an upcoming 2013 fantasy adventure film co-written, produced and directed by Peter Jackson. It is the second of a three-part film interpretation of the novel The Hobbit.

The cover re-introduces Orlando Bloom into the new LOTR franchise 'The Hobbit'. By putting him in the centre and making him larger than the others on the cover it brings more attention to him. This works well as Bloom is the most recognisable actor of the three so readers would take more of an interest in the magazine. His body language suggest like all the previous films it will involve a battle of some sort. On either side of bloom is Lee pace (The Hobbit, An unexpected Journey) and Evangeline Lilly (Hit TV show Lost) also holding weapons enforcing the predicted battle. Both, as well as Bloom play Elves which suggests Elves will be playing a significant part within this film.

The setting of the cover is very dramatic, they're surrounded by ashes and smoke which will remind the audience of fire and danger and also related to the dragon Smaug. Other than the smoke it's mainly a white background which makes the title and character's stand out even more. Red titles is put in making it dramatic and contrasting with the grey and white neutral colours. In huge writing they have 'the Hobbit' written in capital letters which is eye catching. Above that 'on set in middle earth' is written which suggests they will have a lot of behind the scenes look of the film. Due to the big following of the franchise audiences will respond to this and want to buy it to get a first look of the film.

"The Vow" Trailer Analysis

The Vow follows all the cliche conventions of a romantic film, the audience first see's a wedding ceromny going on between the two main charectors (McAdams and Tatum). This suggests themes of romance giving the audience an idea as to the genre making the target audience clear within the first 10 second. It also has themes of comedy as we see the couple and there friends running away from security in a gallery suggesting its a light hearted film. These theme's continue as a 40 second montage of their life together prior the accident. The trailer is in chronological order so the audience continue on with them. Over the top of this montage is Tatum stating the importance of moment in life, he then asks us what if you couldn't remember any of them. This makes us feel sympathy when it hits as we feel like we know them.

The hospital clip focuses from blurred giving the audience the same disorientated feeling as paige continuing to make us feel close to them. In the background we hear a heart mongering machine which we associate with death and trauma, it creates a tense atmosphere which is added onto by the discovery of her brain damage. Its released for valentines day due to its genre and target audience. Dramatic music comes in setting the serious mood of the film at this point when Tatum is discovering his wife doesn't know him anymore. A long angle shot of him in the hospital sitting down on the floor despite there being chairs makes him appear isolated and sad.

It follows the classic cliches of a romantic film where the boy loses the girl and try's to get the girl back as he states " I need to make my wife fall in love with me again". We the couple standing in serrate rooms one on the outside of the door and the other in the bedroom suggesting they are becoming distant and he is unable to help her. The remainder of the trailer follows the pair struggling to get back to where they were prior the accident which will leave the audience questioning whether or not they will be together again.

We see him sleeping on the couch suggesting they are living together but not as a couple post accident. The trailer suggests it doesn't work about between the pair as she say's "I hope one day i can love the way that you love me" but people will have preconceptions of how it will end and assume the ending is him getting the girl back or her getting her memory back. Tatum confirms giving up explain how hard it will be for him to walk away but at the end the audience is given an indicator that there is more to the trailer as Tatum say's "we will always find a way back to each other".

Both stars are commonly associated with the romance genre. McAdam's in the Notebook and about time and Tatum in Dear John and step up. Due to there success's within this genre they already have a fan base primarily young girls who will go and see this film because the pair are in it together.

"Mirrors" Poster Analysis

By using a long shot they allow us to see the main cast but also the setting giving us an insight to setting and cast of the film. The posters shows what we assume to be a family, standing in a triangle formation leaning over the boy suggesting he is an important character. The two adult characters appear to be revolving around him suggesting the story does aswell. The boy is sitting on the floor in a pool of water looking angry as he looks at his reflection. His hand is reaching forward suggesting he is reaching into the other side which relates to the caption below him "There is evil on the other side". The two other charectors stand behind the boy looking over at him in concern, this emphasises our theory that he is the centre of the story. The reflection of the water ripples has been reflected onto the walls all over the room which suggests both sides (evil and not) are coming together. Beside the boy is a toy truck on its side floating away suggesting themes of trauma as well as suggesting the boy is no longer a child.

They have used dark tones which conveys the horror genre. The bright red title in contrast to the dark tones is effective as it draws the audience in making it eye-catching. They have linked the layout of the title by reversing the second R in 'Mirrors' to emphasis the meaning of the title. Above the title is 'Kiefer Sutherland' which will encourage people who enjoy his movies to go watch it. They tend to only include big names on posters as people wont respond to names they don't recognise.
